That's Me!

About Me

Hi everyone! My name is Theresa Cetnar. I am a graduate student at UAlbany studying Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology. I am a 2nd grade teacher in a city outside of Albany. I absolutely love 2nd grade because my students are still excited to learn but are independent enough to do things on their own.

Some of my favorite things:

  • Baking
  • Working out
  • Reading
  • Disney
  • Bike Riding

My Topic and Purpose

My topic focuses on providing more differentiated learning opportunities in the classroom. The idea of differentiated materials allows for instruction to be provided in many different activities, instead of just learning by the traditional teacher run instruction. A way of providing differentiated instruction is through the idea of Choice Boards. Choice boards focus on one domain, where students are given the choice of activities they need to complete. These activities are hands on, partner base ( students learn from each other) activities that practice skills that are being taught in the present as well as skills that have been taught.

Students take ownership of their learning, learn from each other, practice skills, practices skills in different situations allowing for deeper understanding. Students apply knowledge in different situations allowing for deeper understanding.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will be able to:

  • define differentiating in the classroom.
  • define choice board.
  • design choice board based upon curriculum.
  • apply choice board in the classroom.

Needs Assessment

Instructional Problem Teachers are responsible to teach every single student in their classroom. As we know, not all students are the same. These students have different backgrounds, thoughts, ideas, strengthens as well as challenges. This thought not only is about the student by how they learn. The big problem is that teachers are not realizing how important it is to differentiate materials being taught to foster students with all learning styles. Another problem is that teachers may understand that students do learn differently but are not sure how to provide instruction to those students. That is a very intimidating task of making sure an educators provides activities for all learners to learn the same instructional material.

Content/Learners The content of this mini courses focuses on differentiation in the classroom. Participants will learn the true definition of Differentiation and why it is important. Participants will also learn about an instructional method of including differentiation in the classroom to reach all learners in the form of a choice board. This method will allow for participants to take what they know and implement it into their own instructional environments.

Goals The first goal of this course is for educators to have a better understanding of what differentiation and how important it is to differentiate materials in the classroom to address all the variety of learning styles. The second goal of this course is to provide educators with a strategy on a way to differentiate instruction for students ( choice boards). This strategy allows educators to utilize choice boards in their disciplines allowing for different activities ( group work, computer work, posters, worksheets, etc.) that touch upon activities for all learning styles.

Analysis of the Learner and Context

Learner: Learners who picked this course are most likely have the want to learn more about how to differentiate instruction within the classroom setting. These individuals will probably consist of ETAP 623 learners as well as educators of any grade level. These strategies can be implemented in all grade levels ( content will look differently based upon the grade level).

Content: Content will be delivered online. Learners will need internet. They will also be asked to have a means of watching and listening to videos ( speakers, headphones etc.). The videos provide support to instruction and is rich with key information.

Performance-Based Objectives

Define course-level target objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify their own understanding of Differentiation as refine it based upon what is taught.
  • Participants will identify why Differentiation of instruction is important in the classroom
  • Participants will understand the process of creating differentiated choice boards
  • Participants will create choice boards based upon their discipline

Task Analysis

Unit 1: What is differentiation in a classroom and why is it important?

  • Learners will formulate their own definition of differentiation.
  • Learners will identify what differentiation means.
  • Learners will identify why differentiation is important in a classroom.

Unit 2: How can you provide more opportunities for a more differentiation instruction in the classroom?

  • Learners will identify what a choice board is.
  • Learners will identify how choice boards can provide differentiation in the classroom setting.
  • Learners will identify the process of creating a choice board.
  • Learners will recall the specific skills that are to be addressed in their choice board.

Unit 3: How will learners create a choice board within their discipline?

  • Learners will recall the specific skills that are to be addressed in their choice board.
  • Learners will design a choice board based upon the steps taught in person Unit.
