In this section, the usage of audio, pronunciation descriptions to can remind you the sound of Pinyin, It is important to remember the images while you are learning Pinyin, as they will help you to remember the pronunciation. You can click on the words to check the sound. This way, learners can learn Pinyin more actively.

Syllabic Structure and Pronunciation of Modern Standard Chinese

A syllable of Modern Standard Chinese is usually composed of three parts: an initial consonant, a final consisting of vowels or vowels and ending consonants. The syllable of Chinese also contains tone, the tone.

Syllable= Tone + Initial + Final

Chinese sounds are represented by Pinyin, which consist twenty-five of the twenty-six letters of the Roman alphabet. Although Pinyin symbols are very same as English letters, the actually sounds are very different.

Vowels: The six vowels in Pinyin pronunciation are listed below. They will be read in the first tone, which sounds like a sustained sung note.


Consonants: The following consonants: p, f, t, k, h, q, x, c, s, ch and sh are aspirated sounds. If you put your palm in front of your mouth when you are reading out these letters, you will feel the air being exhaled.


Groups: There are five groups with the end sound “g” and five groups with the end sound “n”. The first tone is like singing a sustained note. ang, ong, eng, ing, uang, an, en, in, un ǖn

Once the student enter the finish the content for Level one, teachers can using Chinese songs from Youtube or Growing up with Chinese to support the teaching process, and help them to reinforce the content they have been learning or of their interests. The constant stimuli, will help to improve their pronunciation and tones.
