Unit 2: Why Integrate Technology in the Classroom?
Introduction to Lesson Two
"Whenever possible, design with the future in mind" (Larson and Lockee, 2013, p. 12).
Why integrate technology in the classroom? As educators, we are in a field that is ever-changing and evolving. Curriculum, the structure of classes, and content are consistently growing and improving. Technology is rapidly making its way into classrooms and as educators, we must prepare for the future of education. "Many schools are working toward equipping all students with an electronic device, such as a laptop, netbook, or digital tablet – a concept known as “one-to-one computing.” The idea is to provide every child with ready access to important educational resources like digital textbooks and the Internet" (Hong, 2016). Google Classroom and Kami are two online platforms that can enhance and simplify the delivery of information from educators to students. Utilizing this technology in the classroom can help to increase efficacy and student engagement.
At the end of this unit, participants will:
- identify three benefits of integrating technology in the classroom
- express an understanding of the importance and value of a paperless classroom
Please read the article linked below regarding technology integration in education. The purpose of this activity is for participants to explore the information in the article and recognize that technology integration has been making its way into education for many, many years. This article was chosen specifically due to the high-quality, informative nature of the text as well as the date it was written. This article was composed 20 years ago in 1999 before the development of computers, cell-phones, and most of the technology we use today in everyday life. Any bias toward integration of technology in education should understand the importance and value that lay in the marriage of technology and education as it can enrich the classroom experience.
