Mini-course front page: Tiffany Francis's Mini-Course: Immersive Technologies for Learning
About Me
Hi, Tiffany Francis, an enthusiastic educator who has a passion for early childhood education. I've earned my BA in early childhood education and childhood education in STEM. I also earned my associate's degree in liberal arts and science. Iโve transitioned into the field of instructional design to learn more about teaching online and about incorporating technology into an everyday classroom setting. Beyond my professional pursuits, Iโm passionate about, traveling the world, and learning more about different cultures and education in different countries. I also enjoy art and classroom creation design like bulletin boards and classroom decor, I also enjoy online shopping and fashion.
My Topic and Purpose
Immersive Technologies
Immersive Technologies is a professional development program that aims to give you valuable insights in the new world yet to come. This class will dive into a three-dimensional environment. Instead of viewing a mobile screen in front of them, we will be immersed in the environment and able to interact with the world. This program will help you build your professional experience with technology and teach you networking and online teaching techniques with online learning. You will also work in different programs to help increase presents ) in different STEM topics throughout this course. We will dive into using technology with different materials like oculus and apple lenses to discover the world in a virtual reality environment. Students in this course will be given the opportunity to interact in an immersive setting and will gain first hand experience by developing a VR based research demo and application as a major project this semester. You will need a laptop and to download and install unity, meta, and homeroom which is an application that allows you to post pictures of your projects and communicate with your classmates. I will create an Immersive Learning course that will aim to give valuable insights into the world that is yet to come. I have decided to create an immersive technology course that will focus on VR experiences. The world as we know it is changing and so is the level of technology in the classroom. This course will prepare teachers for teaching online in an immersive setting. This will help prepare us for another shutdown, and the future.

I picked this topic because I do predict school will soon be a VR experience option. VR will soon be the new reality.
Topic and Potential Scope of Learning Involved
Immersive Technologies is a professional development program that aims to give you valuable insights in the new world yet to come. This class will dive into a three-dimensional environment. Instead of viewing a mobile screen in front of them, we will be immersed in the environment and able to interact with the world. This program will help you build your professional experience with technology and teach you networking and online teaching techniques with online learning. We will be focusing on building a VR classroom for future online school options. We will learn how to create an immersive experience with sound, movement, color and objects. Essentially, virtual reality (VR) enables students to actively participate in a realistic virtual environment, leading to deeper understanding and improved learning outcomes compared to traditional methods. Other important learning components in a VR classroom include: immersive experiences, active learning through interaction, enhanced visualization of complex concepts, increased engagement and knowledge retention, hands-on practice in simulated environments, development of critical thinking skills, collaborative learning opportunities, and the ability to explore scenarios from different perspectives.
Main elements: of VR
Immersion: The capacity to feel totally present in the virtual world, which promotes involvement and presence.
Interaction: The ability to move things, engage with virtual worlds, and make decisions in the simulation, all of which support active learning.
Visualization: Making abstract things easier to understand by presenting them in a three-dimensional visual style.
Application-based learning allows students to apply information in a real-world setting by having them practice skills in a simulated setting.
Personalized learning is letting students investigate many facets of a subject according to their interests and at their own speed.
Collaboration: Encouraging student participation in the online setting to allow for group discussion and problem-solving
Needs Assessment
The ultimate objective of assessments is to examine the student by having them solve challenges in real-world scenarios. With virtual reality (VR), we can now learn by doing, and we can evaluate how realistically a learner is "doing" in the VR environment. When all of our senses are used, including sight, hearing, and the appropriate movement, we learn best. Now, we can implement assessments in the same way.
People gain knowledge from their errors. When learners are exposed to problems in a virtual environment, they may make mistakes and grow from them in a safe and regulated manner, all the while having their performance regularly evaluated. This provides students with immediate feedback.
Assessments conducted in an immersive virtual reality setting, as opposed to more conventional approaches, collect significantly more detailed data that each student may see, evaluate, and report on. We may also have several participants in the same assessment setting thanks to technology, even if they are participating from different parts of the world.
- Educational Problem or Opportunity
The problem I'm addressing with this mini-course is that we never know what will happen. Just like covid shut everything down educators had to quickly learn how to teach online and how to work Zoom. This mini-course may help educators prepare for the world yet to come. It encourages educators to get a jump on it and encourages them to be prepared for another government shutdown. This assessment focuses on application creation and hands-on activities instead of just reading and trying to apply what you learned in an assessment. This mini course allows students to apply what they learned in a hands-on immersive experience through different applications.
- Learners/Participants Involved
This mini-course is designed for K-12 teachers and instructional leaders who are looking to prepare for the future of education. Learners will participate in this mimi course and will walk away with the knowledge of teaching online in an immersive experience .
Analysis of Gaps: Know vs. Need to Know (Reality vs. Ideal)
- Current Reality: As of today we have seen technology in education increase. After covid we have seen different models of online learning. Synonymous learning and synchronous learning and students have the option to choose which one. A few years ago this option wasn't an option for students.
- Ideal State: Teachers would be designing a classroom and through each step teachers will be assessing their progress. Each application will get students to think critically and create different steps to creating an immersive classroom. The goal is to make your classroom as real as possible. It's supposed to feel like you are in a classroom without actually being in a classroom.
Performance-Based Objectives
(1) Learners will understand how to navigate through modern technology and tools related to human perception.
2) Learners develop an application of VR experiment in a classroom setting
3) Learners will create an Immersive classroom setting
4) Learners will learn how to host to our VR classroom
***Goal is to create a fully online classroom setting through virtual reality. This mini course will prepare you for teaching online.
Tools needed
- uses XR Interaction Toolkit (and no specific platform tool), Oculus Quest 1&2, HP, HTC, etc).
- Voice chat with auto-detection
- Custom Avatar (male or female) for teachers / students
- Simpler representation for students, only head and hands.
- whiteboard, the teacher can adjust its position.
- Students can connect both in VR and Android phone and iPhone
- Teacher can upload slides to device (Quest) and see them in VR.
- ALTSPACE
