Kimberlee's Mini-Course: Geometer's Sketchpad
This mini-course is going to introduce you on how to integrate Geometer's Sketchpad into your classroom!
This course will cover:
- What is Geometer's Sketchpad?
- Why use it?
- How to integrate it into your classroom?
The ultimate goal of this mini-course is that at the end, you feel comfortable enough to make a lesson using Geometer's Sketchpad.
Unit 1: What is Geometer's Sketchpad?
Geometer's Sketchpad is a computer program that can be used to analyze Euclidean Geometry. There are tools that allow you to create different geometric constructions.
Unit 2: Why use it?
Geometer's Sketchpad allows you to visually see how and why a geometric proof works. It also allows you to alter the variable to see that the proof is true for every case.
Unit 3: How to integrate it into your mathematics classroom?
In order to get a basic background understanding of the program, watch the following video:
Before including the program into the lesson, there should be at least one class period dedicated introducing it to students. First, show the students where to find the program on the school computers. Then I suggest that you walk through each tool with the students and explain the purpose of them. After that I would address what is important in the toolbar. Make sure to inform the students that the help bar is there to be, well for a lack of a better word, "helpful." I would give the students 10-15 minutes of free time to play around with the program. They should feel confident in it before using it in an educational sense.
