Designing Google Classroom to support Student Learning in a Pandemic

Overview and Purpose

The purpose of this course is to help participants facilitate remote student learning by utilizing the features of Google Classroom and the google suite of apps. In 2020 many teachers felt unprepared for the sudden full switch from in person learning to remote learning. This course aims to assist teacher who are not well versed in remote instruction or in using a LMS like google classroom. Specifically during a pandemic or other emergency where typical in person instruction is not feasible.

Topics Covered:

  • Creating a Google Classroom and tailoring setting to meet class needs.
  • Creating use guidelines for students.
  • Posting and content creation using google suite.
  • Using google apps in conjunction with 3rd party apps to create interactive assignments.
  • Learning to communicate with students online.
  • How to give students timely and effective feedback using Google Classroom.

Course Objectives

  • Participants will be able to maintain and utilize a Google Classroom.
  • Participants will be comfortable using google suite and other 3rd party applications to create assignments and/or communicate with students.

Needs Assessment

The results of the needs assessment indicate that depending on the school the teachers worked at, their experiences were completely different. 50% of the surveyed educators had some type of training about teaching remotely using Google Classroom prior to going remote, while the other half were self-taught. At most, the teachers only felt semi-prepared for when school went remote, with about 75% of them answering 2 or 3 on a scale of 1-5 of how prepared for remote instruction they felt last year. Even among those who had received training claimed that the training was just a bare basics crash course and would like to have more training on the topic. Finally, educators feel ongoing training that focused on topics such as; available tools, extensions plug-in/apps, and training tailored to their specific student population would be helpful and would have made a huge difference when going remote.

Performance Objectives

Participants will understand how to create an maintain a remote learning environment using Google Classroom Participants will be able to utilize third party apps and plug-ins to further support student learning. Participants will be able to create lesson plans and materials using google classroom and the google suite of apps. Participants will understand how to communicate and interact with students using Google Classroom

Course Units

Unit 1: Introduction & Guidelines

This unit will introduce Google Classroom and it's basic mechanics. In addition to getting participants familiar with the basic functions of Google Classroom, this unit will also go over the creation of creating usage guidelines for students.

Unit 2: Posts & Content

This unit will review the layout of Google Classroom and all of the pages' features. After becoming familiar with the layout of Google Classroom, participants will learn to create content for students such as materials and assignments.

Unit 3: Plugins & Apps

This unit will go over the many 3rd party plugins and apps that can be used in order to create interactive remote assignments. This unit will also review the apps and plugins students can use when completing assignments.

Unit 4: Communication & Feedback

This final unit will go over how to communicate with students using email and/or google classroom. Additionally, it will go over how to give students feedback using Google classroom tools.
